This recently restored Polish musical comedy filmed in the outskirts of Warsaw, premiered in Warsaw in 1937 and opened three months later in New York. Featuring a wanderer, a poor shoemaker's daughter and a circus performer, The Jester provides a look into the vanished world of Eastern European Jewry. Many of the crew and actors were murdered during the Holocaust.
The film features a Purim play, complete with music and costumes which the Nazis appropriated portions of the scene to use in an antisemitic propaganda film, The Eternal Jew.
The film was been provided and restored with new English subtitles by The National Center for Jewish Film, www.jewishfilm.org.
Directed by Joseph Green & Jan Nowina-Przybylski Poland, 1937, 90 min Yiddish with new English subtitles Drama
