Somewhere in Between
Somewhere in Between performs contemporary instrumental music that spans genres, including jazz, R&B, world fusion and ambient electronica. It performs compositions by keyboardist Marcus Duke and other artists like Miles Davis, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul, Joni Mitchell, Ralph Towner, Marc Seals, and Bruce Cockburn. The music combines tight arrangements and a lot of improvisation, with no two sets sounding alike. (Read/hear more at marcusduke.com.)
The band comprises a flock of highly migratory members:
Keyboardist and leader Marcus Duke is from NYC, where he went to the High School of Performing Arts (the "Fame" school), Juilliard Prep School and Mannes College of Music. In LA, he recorded numerous albumsthree of his ownand performed with his band, Nothin' Sirius, and other artists including Lou Rawls. In the NW, he has played with reggae, Klezmer, Afro-pop and world fusion groups, and performed and recorded several CDs with his current group. Marcus, who got into music as therapy for a near-total loss of hearing in his youth, plans to keep playing 'til he drops.
Drummer/percussionist Sam Alamillo is from Chicago and has been performing professionally for two decades. He studied percussion at Indiana University. Sam has performed with international and local musicians including Tito Puente, the Morales-Matos family, Steve Guasch, Julio Jauregui, Carlos Cascante, Johnny Conga, Nueva Era, as well as the Tacoma Symphony and Bellevue Choral Society. He is the house timbalero/drummer for salsa night at the historic Century Ballroom in Capitol Hill, Seattle, performing with Buena Vibra.
Bassist Dennis Staskowski hails from Detroit. He earned a degree in instrumental performance from the University of Washington, with top honors. He has performed with The Contemporary Group, the Octava Chamber Orchestra, the Bellevue and Federal Way Symphony Orchestras, The Evergreen City Ballet Orchestra and the New Chamber Orchestra. He has also played and recorded with NW jazz, rock and world music groups such as the Seattle Creative Music Orchestra, One Hand Clapping, the Valse Cafe Orchestra and the Deepak Ram Quintet.
Guitarist Jye Paet comes from Guam, where the the island music and lifestyle inevitably found it's way into his playing style. He has performed with reggae bands since his youth and helped cultivate a teeming roots reggae scene on the island. In the NW, he expanded his palette, embracing jazz, funk, hip hop, soul, R&B, and samba. He plays in several bands, including the cross-genre At Five, the reggae group Po 'okela Street Band, and most recently, Somewhere in Between.
