Cabin Fever 2023
Join us at the 2023 Cabin Fever, Sustainable and Resilient Gardens, our 13th annual gardening symposium sponsored by the Master Gardener Foundation of Spokane County. This online event will start on Saturday, March, 18, 9-11 AM with a live presentation by Benjamin Vogt. Benjamin will speak on, The New Garden Ethic, addressing in a time of mass extinction and climate change, how and for whom we garden matters more than ever. Our built landscapes reflect the dominant ethos of our societythey are too often made to meet the needs and desires of humans without consideration other species. What would happen if our society not only developed empathy for wildlife but recognized and advocated for their inherent worth? What role do native plants have in opening us to the perspective of these others? In this powerful and challenging lecture covering ecology, psychology and philosophy, Benjamin will explore why our gardens are ideal settings to cultivate defiant compassion, and how those gardens can help us grow into our fullest potential as stewards of life beyond the home landscape.
Benjamin Vogt is the author of Prairie Up: An Introduction to Natural Garden Design as well as A New Garden Ethic: Cultivating Defiant Compassion for an Uncertain Future. His work has been featured in The American Gardener, Dwell, Fine Gardening, The Guardian, Horticulture, Midwest Living, and the Wall Street Journal. Benjamin owns Monarch Gardens, a prairie-inspired design firm based in Nebraska, which works with clients from around the country.
This event is an inspiring and informational virtual event with a focus on sustainable gardening. You'll learn how to develop the skills you need so that your garden works with nature, not against it. Recording of Benjamins presentation will be available for 30 days following his presentation. Multiple NW-based speakers on topics ranging from urban food forests, native plants, waterwise gardens, wildfire preparedness, climate change and more will be available to all registrants to watch virtually through May 31, 2023.
