Coping with Disaster - My Experiences as a First Responder -- Cheryl Price
Thursday, January 5, 2023  1pm - 3pm  Mt. Carmel Lutheran  Church, SLO

$5 for LLCC Members $10 for Others

A long-time recovery Specialist with FEMA and other disaster agencies will explain how disaster relief agencies go about their work and share stories about what it's like to be first on the scene.

Cheryl Price has helped communities pick up the pieces after superstorms, wildfires, mudslides, and hurricanes. Her passion is helping communities understand how to mitigate and recover from natural disasters.

She will discuss what her experiences have been like with Super Storm Sandy, the Washington mud slide, the Colorado mud slide, and the Paradise Fire.

In this class, you will learn about:

The four phases of disaster management, and why each phase is critical to a communitys ability to recover: mitigation; preparedness; response; and recovery.

What FEMA does:  What can you expect from the government response phase of a disaster?   How long does FEMA serve a community after disaster? How a community is a vital partner with the government to guard against challenges posed by a catastrophic incident. Included will be information about individual preparedness and Community Emergency  Response Teams (CERT)

Non-Government agencies like insurance companies and their roles.

What  happens to the local wildlife, pets, livestock: Horse and Animal Rescue Team (HART) and Disaster Animal Rescue (DART)

Cheryl Price served as Government Liaison and Long-Term Recovery Specialist with FEMA and non-government agencies (American Red Cross, Samaritans Purse and Team Rubicon) between 2011-2019. She participated in relief efforts for New Yorks Superstorm Sandy, big mudslides in Colorado and Washington muds, four wildland fires in California, and five east coast hurricanes. She is passionate about helping communities understand their important role in mitigating and recovering from disaster events.
