New York Times bestselling writer Isabel Allende, born in Peru and raised in Chile, long since a California resident, is the author of ten works of fiction, four memoirs, and three young adult novels. These have been translated into 27 languages. Two of her novels were made into major motion pictures The House of the Spirits, and Of Love and Shadows. In 2004 she was inducted into the American Academy of Arts
and Letters. The Hans Christian Andersen Literature Award was presented to her in 2012.

Alejandro Murgia, who will be conversing with Isabel Allende, is the author of Southern Front and This War Called Love (both winners of the American Book Award). His non-fiction book The Medicine of Memory highlights the Mission District in the 1970s, during the Nicaraguan Solidarity movement. A founding member and the first director of The Mission Cultural Center, Murguia was a founder of The Roque Dalton Cultural Brigade, and co-editor of Volcán: Poetry From Central America. Currently he is a professor in Latina Latino Studies at San Francisco State University. In poetry he has published Spare Poems, and this year a new collection Native Tongue. He is the Sixth San Francisco Poet Laureate and the first Latino poet to hold the position.
