Medea/I Dreamed of Rats
Two Solo Performances Take the Stage
at Balch Street Theatre

Medea meets Gogol in provocative double feature

Akron,OH--Center for Applied Theatre and Active Culture (CATAC) and New World Performance Laboratory (NWPL) continue to present exceptional, alternative theatre in Akron with an evening featuring two masterful solo performances,"Medea" and "I Dreamed of Rats," on February 7, 8, 14, 15, and 22 at 7:30 pm and February 16 and 23 at 2 pm in the Balch Street Theatre, 220 South Balch Street, Akron OH, 44302. NWPL company member Debora Totti performs the area premiere of "Medea," based on a retelling of the classic myth by Italian actor, writer, and political activist Franca Rame (1928-2013) and her husband Nobel laureate Dario Fo.  "Medea" is preceded by local actor Terence Cranendonk in "I Dreamed of Rats," a night of preposterous terror, adapted by the actor himself from Nikolai Gogol's play "The Inspector General." Admission is $15; student price is $10.  Reservations can be made by calling 330-867-3299 or online at www.brownpapertickets.com

"Medea" tells the story of a stranger, a foreigner exiled in her husband's country, who must battle the pressures of the roles she is expected to play: good wife, forgiving lover, tender mother. When her husband, Jason, betrays her for a younger woman, Medea must decide how to break the chains of her social prison and put herself in service to a "new woman."  Italian actor Debora Totti, a long time Akron resident and NWPL company member, applies her exceptional craft and global perspective to this Medea for the 21st century, a woman abandoned and in despair who comes to realize that she is a victim of centuries of male oppression.  Debora Totti explores her own story as mother, wife, and woman in relation to Medea's tragedy.  The resulting performance is a raw and total act, fully-embodied acting, a master performer in vivid confrontation with a mythic character.

With "I Dreamed of Rats" actor Terence Cranendonk brings a 150 year-old Russian classic to contemporary audiences in an intimate and visceral event, by reimagining it as the paranoid fantasy of one of its supporting characters, the Mayor.  The performance is both an actor's personal exploration and a comedy of universal appeal, highlighting the precision and craft of the performer's body and voice.  With a few simple objects and an overcoat, Terence Cranendonk plays out a grotesque comedy of confusion, secrecy, and triumph brought on by the rumor of a Government Inspector's imminent arrival.  "I Dreamed of Rats" confronts its spectators with a frightening propositionthat fear inevitably leads to the abuse of power, for the small and the mighty alikeand offers cleansing through the ridiculous and the burlesque.

About NWPL:   NWPL has been producing world-class, alternative theatre in Northeast Ohio since 1992.  NWPL's latest work "Medea" premiered in December 2013 in Madison, Wisconsin,as part of NWPL's exchange with TAPIT/new works Ensemble.  The exchange with TAPIT/new works was made possible, in part, through a grant from the Network of Ensemble Theaters' Travel & Exchange Network (NET/TEN), supported by lead funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.  CATAC/NWPL's 2013-2014 season is supported in part by The Arthur Kelly Fund of Akron Community Foundation and The Ohio Arts Council helped fund this program/organization with state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence and cultural enrichment for all Ohioans.
