Hanneke Cassel & Friends Christmas Concert
Come celebrate Christmas with Hanneke!! Scottish-American Fiddler and native Oregonian Hanneke Cassel will team up with Ryan McKasson, Brooke McKasson, Liddy Hoover, Tim Downing, and Christopher Lewis for a night of holiday favorites and some new tunes from Cassels recent album O Come Emmanuel. The night will be filled with fiddling, singing, and hopefully some joy.
Effervescent and engaging, Port Orford-raised fiddler Hanneke Cassels music fuses influences from the Isle of Skye and Cape Breton with Americana grooves and musical innovations. She has performed and traveled across North America, Europe, Australia and Asia. Hannekes music is a blend of the contemporary and traditional, described by the Boston Globe as exuberant and rhythmic, somehow wild and innocent, delivered with captivating melodic clarity and an irresistible playfulness.
Fiddler and violist Ryan McKasson has gained a reputation as a performer, composer, collaborator, and teacher. In 1996 he was the youngest to win the National Scottish Fiddle Championship and in1997 he was awarded a Merit Scholarship for Viola Performance from the University of Southern California. Ryan has been a member of many bands over his 40 plus year career including his family band The McKassons, The Syncopaths, Ensemble Galilei, MAC, Kalos, and duos with Eric McDonald and Colin Cotter.
Born in Southern Indiana, Brooke McKasson musical life began in her hometown church (where her father was music director and pianist.) She went on to study classical flute and obtained a degree in Music Therapy from the University of Evansville. Shortly after college she moved to Southern California where she met fiddler Ryan McKasson. In 2002, they married and relocated to the Pacific Northwest to start a family and there she began exploring Celtic and American traditional folk music, recording, and touring nationwide with The McKassons to critical acclaim. The Boston Globe described her voice as an in your ear mezzo, and Brooke has drawn from a deep well of influences to develop her own songful approach. Ryan and Brooke currently reside in Washington with their four children.
Liddy (Voetberg) Hoover is a wife, a mother of four, a multi-instrumentalist, a songwriter and National Texas-style fiddle champion. Based in the Pacific Northwest, Liddy enjoys playing all styles of music with her family (the much loved Voetberg Family) and friends.
Tim Downing was born in Portland, OR. His family moved to Brazil when he was 6 and he started playing piano at age 7. He attended Berklee College of Music and focused on classical music and jazz, but took a long detour into pop/rock when he toured with Christian artist Natalie Grant for 9 years. With a wife who is a nurse, he decided to focus on being a trophy husband during the pandemic. He now comes out of retirement to re-join Hanneke and her merry band for this Christmas tour.
Longtime collaborator with Hanneke, Canadian native Christopher Lewis provides the driving guitar sound in the band. A Berklee College of Music alum, Christopher has been involved with album production and performance in the Boston indie rock scene and is a former member of Bostons Park Street Church Sunday Night worship team.
