Seed Swap & Calif. Native Seed Collecting HANDS-ON Workshop
Let's collect and share seeds!

Did you know that a number of our local California native plants grow easily from seed? Do you collect seeds from plants that have grown well in your garden and have some extra to share? In this time of supply chain issues and rising prices, we can create abundance and support our community by saving and sharing seeds.

We will be collecting seed from our native wildflower field at our Master Gardener Demonstration Garden. Well also clean and package seed in paper seed packets that you can easily make yourself. Well show you how and supply the paper. You will go home with a variety of seeds.

In addition, well have a demonstration on propagating white sage from cuttings. This plant is currently under pressure due to excessive harvesting and poaching. Learning how to grow this plant can help us respect and support indigenous cultural relationships.

All participants will receive a complimentary packet of white sage seeds.
Finally, well swap seeds. Bringing seeds is not mandatory, however, participants who bring seed will have priority in taking seed. Quantities may be limited and dictated by availability.

It is most beneficial to expand the availability of locally saved seed that has been open-pollinated, however, for this inaugural seed swap, we welcome all seed.

Come and be Seeded! Space is limited, cost $20.

Participants will be able to take home a variety of seed packets and handouts with resources for seed saving and propagation tips. Materials will be provided, however, it would be helpful to bring a pair of scissors or clippers, a magnifying glass or lens and something to write with. Dress in layers for sun or shade and bring water to drink.

Instructors, Janice Kuch is a Master Gardener who always enjoyed gardening in her hometown of Chicago. She began gardening with native plants in southern California in 2004. Since living on the central coast, she has been involved with various local habitat restoration projects, is part of the native plant group at the UCSC Arboretum and is currently a volunteer with the Amah Mutsun Land Trust coastal prairie restoration project.

Co-instructor Kari Olsen discovered her love of plant propagation in 2006 through Master Gardeners and the Cabrillo College Horticulture program. She has put these skills to use at both commercial and nonprofit organizations, working for Gold Rush Nursery in Soquel and the Elkhorn Slough Reserve in Northern Monterey County. Kari currently leads the propagation team for the Santa Cruz County Chapter of the California Native Plant Society.

COVID-19 precautions: This is an outdoor event. We recommend all participants be fully vaccinated, wear masks and maintain 6' of distance. Unvaccinated participants are required to wear a mask. Hand sanitizer will be provided. The instructor is fully vaccinated.
