Lutheran and Scandinavian Music of the Renaissance and Early Baroque
The musicians of Ensemble De Organographia, Gayle and Phil Neuman, perform a program entitled "Lutheran and Scandinavian Music of the Renaissance and Early Baroque" The repertoire, guaranteed to transport the listener back to the soundscape of music and instruments familiar to Luther, includes the earliest settings of Lutheran hymns by Johann Walther and Caspar Othmayr, as well as music by King Henry VIII with whom Luther corresponded. Some of the earliest notated music from Denmark, Sweden and Norway will be included by composers such as Joseph Klug and the earliest notated example of a Norwegian folk melody, "The Netherworldly Outdoor Concert", which includes a period eyewitness account of its first 'supernatural' performance.
The ensemble performs on a wide variety of historical instruments including viola da braccio, viola da gamba, recorders, douçaine, krummhorn, rackett, dulcian, and cittern. They specialize in performances with rhythmic precision, lively ornamentation, and unparalleled variety. The Neumans are members of The Trail Band and direct The Oregon Renaissance Band.
