Harvey Wainapel Quintet
Just returned to the Bay Area after a two-month stay in Brazil, Harvey Wainapel brings his quintet to the Sound Room, with an all-star cast.
The group's repertoire will include a few Wainapel originals, some lesser-known "jazz standards" and a sprinkling of Brazilian jazz.
The 1998 All Music Guide to Jazz calls saxophonist/clarinetist HARVEY WAINAPEL "one of the most promising and versatile players of his generation." The 2009 Downbeat Critic's Poll lists Harvey as a "rising star" on clarinet. Saxophonist Joe Lovano says, "It's a pleasure to listen to Harvey's soulful interpretations!"
Wainapel has performed with jazz and Brazilian master musicians such as McCoy Tyner, Joe Lovano, Ray Charles, Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, Dave Brubeck, Jovino Santos Neto, and Guinga. He has performed in 22 countries. Wainapel's five CDs feature such company as: pianists Kenny Barron and Mark Levine; bassist Larry Grenadier; Brazilian guitar virtuoso Paulo Bellinati; drummers Kenny Wollesen and Mike Clark; and the Dutch Metropole Orchestra.
ERIK JEKABSON is a freelance trumpet player, composer and educator who lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Erik has three CDs out under his own name: his most recent solo album "Anti-Mass", released in 2012, "Crescent Boulevard" and "Intersection". Erik also co-produced and played on two other recordings which are widely available: "Vista: the Arrival" and "New World Funk Ensemble", and has recorded as a sideman on over 25 other jazz recordings.
He's spent time on the road with Illinois Jacquet, and performed at such notable venues as the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, the Algonquin Room, Madison Square Garden, the Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, the San Francisco Jazz Festival, and the Monterey Jazz Festival. He performs with Bay Area musicians such as Jazz Mafia, Terry Disley, Mario Guarneri, Marcus Shelby, Larry Vuckovich, Lavay Smith, and the Happy Hour Jazz Quintet.
Pianist ADAM SHULMAN has been a staple of the San Francisco Jazz scene since he moved to the city in 2002. Adam performs with Bay Area musicians such as Marcus Shelby, Anton Schwartz, John Wiitala, Vince Lateano, Kitty Margolis, Andrew Speight, Dayna Stephens, Erik Jekabson, Gary Brown, Patrick Wolff, Faye Carrol, Ian Cary, and Mike Zilber. Adam has played as a sideman with internationally renowned artists Stefon Harris, Willie Jones III, Miguel Zenon, Luciana Souza, Paula West, Bobby Hutcherson and the Glen Miller Orchestra.
Bassist JOHN WIITALA has worked with some of the greatest names in jazz, including Joe Henderson, Junior Cook, Charlie Rouse, James Moody, Bud Shank, and Cecil Payne. He has toured with Richie Cole, Arturo Sandoval, Shorty Rogers, and Jessica Williams, and has played at jazz festivals around the world, including Monterey, North Sea, Montreux, Detriot, and JVC/Concord. His recording credits include work with Scott Hamilton, Jessica Williams, Mark Levine, as well as Anton Schwartz.
Drummer JASON LEWIS has played with a variety of talented musicians including: Joshua Breakstone, John Stowell, Gary Burton, James Moody, Mark Murphy, Norma Winstone, Larry Coryell, Darol Anger, Regina Carter, Johnny Frigo, Ann Dyer, James Carter, Taylor Eigsti, John Handy, Anton Schwartz, Mark Levine, Peter Apfelbaum, Cornelius Bumpus, and Kurt Elling. For much of the past several years he has been touring with Boz Scaggs, and appears on the latter's recording of standards, "But Beautiful".
