Robert Gordon - Reading and Book Signing
Join us for an evening with award-winning writer, Robert Gordon, who will be discussing his latest book, "Respect Yourself--Stax Records and the Soul Explosion" (Bloomsbury), about which the New York Times exclaimed,"Gordon's deep knowledge of Memphis, give the book a significance that extends beyond a single recording studio. Robert Gordon knows the place, and he'll take you there."

The book tells a story of the Civil Rights Movement and the rise of Black Power through the lens of southern soul music. Gordon will also read from his other books including "It Came From Memphis" and "Can't Be Satisfied: The Life and Times of Muddy Waters."

Video clips, music, readings and conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A.

Free and open to the public.

Robert Gordon is the author of 6 books, and producer/director of 7 feature documentaries.

He has focused on the American South's music, art, and politics to create an insider's portrait of his home that is both nuanced and ribald.

His films as director/producer include Stranded In Canton, a collaboration with photographer William Eggleston, and the highly-regarded Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story, as well as Johnny Cash's America.

Four of his documentaries have received Grammy Award nominations:
Johnny Cash's America
Respect Yourself: The Stax Records Story
Muddy Waters Can't Be Satisfied
The Road To Memphis, an episode of Martin Scorsese's "The Blues"

And he won a Grammy as a writer of the essay in the 2010 boxed set, Keep An Eye On the Sky, about the band Big Star.

He lives in Memphis, Tennessee with his wife and two children.
