UCI Health: Progressive and Adaptive Project Approach

This panel will discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with a progressive design-build project delivery process. Learn impacts to design direction and challenges associated with response to COVID-19 (and future emerging infectious disease). To outline and review the facets of large project design that work successfully in a remote setting. Discuss challenges and opportunities around design for carbon emission neutrality.

Learning Objectives :
-Participants will learn how UCI managed simultaneous progressive design-build project delivery approaches on the new medical complex at the Irvine Campus

-The UCI team will share design pivots and ongoing challenges associated with responding to emerging infectious disease (COVID-19) and its impacts to traditional design delivery.

-Participants will understand how the UCI team has identified what works and what doesnt in a remote planning setting, and the models used with various partners to move design forward.

-Participants will understand some of the specific challenges around hospital departmental needs and designing for carbon emission neutrality.

Taylor Montgomery

Taylor Montgomery joined Patcraft in 2015 as The Healthcare Flooring Specialist for Southern California. Taylor works closely with owners, architects, and contractors to help specify the ideal flooring solutions with consideration of FGI Guidelines, staff and patient safety, maintenance requirements and budget. She is on the planning committee of the California Society for Healthcare Engineering Orange County chapter, and a member of AIA Orange County Healthcare chapter.

Patcraft is a commercial flooring brand of Shaw Industries, a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway that offers a diverse portfolio of performance flooring products for Acute Care, Ambulatory Care, Behavioral Health, Labs and Medical Office Buildings.

Joe Brothman

Joe Brothman, Director of Facilities, Environmental Health & Safety, and Emergency Management joined UCI Health in 2015. Prior to UCI Health, Joe had similar roles at other Orange County hospitals, spending his entire professional career in the healthcare industry. In his current role, Joe oversees a team of nearly 100 professionals who manage the organizations portfolio of properties including all aspects of building maintenance, management, and compliance, as well as all staff safety and emergency management programs. Joe has a bachelors from Chapman University and a masters from the University of Redlands. He is the president of the California Society for Healthcare Engineering Orange County chapter, a member of the California Hospital Associations Emergency Management Advisory Committee and has received best practice designations in both emergency management and environment of care from the California Hospital Association and the Joint Commission

Paul Da Veiga

Paul Da Veiga is a senior project manager for UCI Health, working primarily on long range planning and construction projects. His background is in urban and regional planning with over 20 years of experience in public sector planning, economic development, and healthcare project management. He is currently managing the development of the $1.3B new medical center campus in Irvine for UCI Health.

Brian Pratt, AIA, DBIA, LEED AP

Brian Pratt, AIA, DBIA, LEED AP is the Campus Architect and Associate Vice Chancellor for Design & Construction Services at the University of California, Irvine. Currently overseeing all major academic building projects, he leads the Design and Construction efforts for the campus delivering highly complex projects via design build. In his more than eight-year tenure at UCI, Brian has overseen several project types including research facilities, laboratories, active learning classrooms, dormitories and highly technical projects. A graduate of California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, he has worked in the private and public sectors and served on the Board of Directors and as President of the American Institute of Architects, Orange County. Brian is accustomed to working with complex projects and multiple user groups and his work has been recognized with several awards and recognitions. With sustainability as a priority, many projects have achieved LEED Platinum certification.
