A Salon of Sonatas for Cello and Piano with Mickey Katz (BSO) and Constantine Finehouse
Greater Boston House Concerts begins 2014 with an exploration of the cello and piano sonatas of the masters Beethoven, Brahms and Debussy.
Boston Symphony Orchestra cellist, Mickey Katz, and pianist, Constantine Finehouse, will traverse Classical, Romantic and Impressionist eras  with sonatas for cello and piano by Beethoven, Brahms and Debussy, spanning close to one hundred years of development of this genre. Beethoven's C Major Sonata, Op. 102 No. 1 and Brahms' F Major Sonata op. 99 are firmly grounded in idealistic and idealized pursuits of the 19th century, masterfully oscillating between folk-dance-inspired musical gestures and lofty, often austere church-like chorales.  Debussy's terse and conflicted D Minor Sonata shifts brusquely from moments of innocent beauty to passages of anxiety and tension, reflecting the collapse of Europe and of its old ideals, both in life and in art, brought on by WWI, and anticipating the untimely demise of the work's creator, barely two years after its completion.
