Quilting Workshop with Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin

Sonié Joi Thompson-Ruffin, or simply Sonié, is the first artist resident at Persimmon Creek's summer 2022 session. Sonié will hold two bag quilting workshops during her residency where guests can learn her craft featuring an original pattern for a strip quilted bag.

The workshop will take participants using an intermediate-level quilting pattern. Each participant will be encouraged to tell a story in their bag through composition, color, and texture and to contemplate the intersections of cultural heritage that are expressed in fiber art. The workshop will allow participants to explore ways of conveying how art can offer a reflection on the rich textures of personal and social identity.

The workshop will be held in Browns chappel, a historic community gathering place for many people in Arrow Rocks Black community.

The completed bag designs will be displayed and judged during Soniés public presentation and question and answer session which at the end of her residency on May 28.

All materials should be provided by participants, as listed below.

Bag Size: 10x 12

Suggested fabric: Medium weight cotton, denim, corduroy, or lightweight upholstery fabric. Note the straps for the bag are adjustable-use them at the full length for shoulder straps or double them up to carry on your arm.

4 fat quarters (colors of your choice)
7/8 yard lining fabric of your choice
1-yard interfacing ( fusible or non-fusible)
1-yard buckram
1 unbleached muslin
Optional yard for bias binding at bag top (Note this can also come from leftover fabrics)
