The Latest Word on Amelia Earhart from Someone Who Knows -- Nancy Farrell
Join historical archaeologist Nancy Farrell as she shares the latest word on one of the most intriguing aviation puzzles of the 20th century.
Amelia Earhart was the world's most famous female aviator when she set out to be the first person to fly around the globe near to the equator.
On July 2, 1937, she and her navigator, Fred Noonan, disappeared somewhere in the South Pacific. Her celebrity and her mysterious fate have fueled rumors ever since, from modest speculations to flights of conspiratorial fancy. In 1988, the International Group For Historic Aircraft Recovery (TIGHAR) launched a scientifically rigorous field study to test the popular hypothesis that the aviators landed safely on Gardner Island (now Nikumaroro in the Republic of Kiribati) and survived there for some unknown time.
TIGHAR has issued preliminary reports, and the research is ongoing. Nancy Farrell, a Paso Robles-based historical archeologist, became a member of the TIGHER team in 2011, and will share what she now knows.
Nancy Farrell has conducted archaeological, historical, archival, and folkloric research for over forty years. Trained at UCLA, she has supervised site studies throughout California, Hawaii and Micronesia. She has served as Cultural Resources Manager at Vandenberg Air Force Base, the Yuma Proving Grounds, and numerous other military sites, and was an on-call Principal Investigator for the Pacific Division of the Corps of Engineers and U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii. Most recently she has completed a Historic Preservation Plan for the World War II Peleliu Battlefield in the Republic of Palau. Nancy lives in Paso Robles, where she is Principal/President of Cultural Resource Management Services, a consulting firm.
