HAITI PROGRAM: Looking for Life; Haiti Apocalypse Now, Birthright Crisis 2013
HAITI PROGRAM

LOOKING FOR LIFE
"Looking for Life" introduces the viewer to two women, Anne-Rose and Rosemene, who each one has their own particular way of battling through life. The former makes lunches in a factory yard in Port-au-Prince and sells her meals to the factory workers; the latter is employed in the same factory as a production worker making pullovers and T-shirts. Every day she buys her midday meal on credit from Anne-Rose. Through the connection between these two women the film shows part of their daily work and the constant battle for survival that they lead together with other women in Haiti. Going beyond this, however the film demonstrates the extent to which the importation of North American goods has brought about the collapse of Haitian regional production and ruined Haiti's economy. The connection between the two topics of the film reveals the significant role that Haitian women of today play in an economy that has been bled dry.

Directed by Claudette Coulanges,  1999 60 min.,  Haiti/Germany, Documentary, Creole/ French/ English subt.

HAITI, APOCALYPSE NOW  January 12, 2010
The first Haitian made documentary about the 2010 earthquake tells of the signs of the disaster that would hit the country. Signs known to many but ignored for years

When the disastrous earthquake hit Haiti in January 2010, killed around 200,000 people and destroyed major structures such as the Presidential palace, the Parliament and the national cathedral as well as the UN Mission, many were those who could not claim that they had not been warned. Environmental and cultural activist, and founder of the community centre Bolivar, Arnold Antonin was among those who sought to raise awareness about the ecological decline that threatened the country.

Antonin is also a celebrated filmmaker who is a multiple winner of the FESPACO's Paul Robeson African Diaspora Award for Best Film.

In his twenty-minutes film he documents the courage of his people and ask why the warnings preceding the catastrophe were unheeded.

Directed by Arnold Antonin, 2011, 19 mins, documentary in English and  Creole with English subtitles.
