Intuitions: An Evening of Music, Dance Poetry & Images to Benefit Arena Theater
Arena Theater proudly presents Intuitions, An Evening of Music, Dance, Poetry & Images to benefit Arena Theater. The evening will feature the performance piece, The Tristan Codas by Lucinda Weaver and Alan Bern, and the music of Cloudfire, a group of musicians inspired by music from around the planet.
Doors open at 5:30 PM for cocktails and a dinner of small plates. Cloudfire will perform at 7:00 PM and The Tristan Codas will be presented at 8:00 PM. The evening will benefit the Programming Fund of Arena Theater and will showcase the theaters multi-media capabilities.
The Tristan Codas is the work of Paces, the collaborative company of Lucinda Weaver, dancer/choreographer, and Alan Bern, poet. The piece includes music from the Austrian composer Klaus Ager and live saxophone by Harrison Goldberg. The Tristan Codas presents the Celtic myth of Tristan and Isolde through CODAS, which derive from the storyline, extending it, looking back on it, and commenting upon it. These codas are performed as a series of vignettes, using a combination of dance, poetry, music, images, and light. Each coda presents its own conclusion, but also moves to the next.
Cloudfire includes Gretchen Barton (oud, dulcimer, bansuri), Janet DeBar (didjeridu), Harrison Goldberg (saxophones, percussion), Dave Jordan (fretless electric bass), Lynn Stoller (tamboura, swar sangam, synthesizers, poetry), with special guest Chris Campbell (drums). Cloudfire voyages through world music, ancient & modern, acoustic & electric, folk & jazz, expressing joy in the moment of creation. Their music is intuitive and collaborative; with neither fixed songs nor band leader, their music is truly in the moment.
Gretchen Barton (oud, dulcimer, bansuri) has been making music on stage the past few years with Sofyan and Rock Rose tribal bellydance troupe, and as a guest musician of the Mendocino Stories & Music Series.
Janet DeBar first heard a didjeridu ten years ago in the Mojave desert. She has been learning to play since then. The didj is her first and only musical instrument, although she does have fourteen of them.
Harrison Goldberg has performed on tenor, alto and soprano saxophone with a variety of groups, including Tabula Rasa, Legend and Neon Egypt; he also provides hand percussion to Cloudfire's sound.
Dave Jordan is Cloudfire's bassist, playing grooves on a left-handed fretless bass. A refugee from Silicon Valley, he is also Cloudfire's recording engineer and web designer (www.CloudfireMusic.com).
Lynn Stoller began playing Indian tamboura and some middle eastern percussion in the '80s. He played with the group TranceFuzion in the '90s around Mendocino County and currently is with EZI World and Cloudfire.
Chris Campbell will be joining Cloudfire on drums for this performance. Jumping from jazz to blues to rock to punk, Chris likes to keep his music interests varied and now gigs with a variety of bands on the coast and in SF and the wider Bay Area.
