A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE
Due to a scandalous indiscretion, Blanche Dubose, a fragile, fading Southern Belle on the precipice of madness, has been banished from her hometown of Laurel, Mississippi. Having no place to go, she arrives unannounced at the shabby, French Quarter apartment of her sister, Stella Kowalski. While living there, Blanche, like a moth flitting around a flame, loses her grip on reality and succumbs to the animalistic sensuality of Stella's husband, Stanley Kowalski. He's a man of solid, blue-collar stock, direct, passionate, and often violent. Set in the restless years following World War II, A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is one of the most famous plays of the 20th Century. Opening on Broadway in 1947, the play rocketed its author, Tennessee Williams, to stardom. Mr. Williams intricately weaves death, desire, love, and lust into his play, lacing it together with a disdain for reality, coupled with a longing for magic and, in the end, the kindness of strangers.
