The Kernal, Big Ole Roots
THE KERNAL
"It all started with a red polyester suit. The western-style outfit belonged to Joe Garner's father Charlie, who played bass on the Grand Ole Opry for thirty years, famously backing 'doodle-doo-doo' star Del Reeves. After his dad passed, Joe went into the attic of his family home, looking for a keepsake. What he found was an alter ego and the beginning of a rich, cathartic ten-year musical journey that culminates with his latest release, Listen to the Blood. Listen to the Blood is the last of a three-album arc, which has been about me trying to prove myself worthy in some ways in a game that my dad had ostensibly mastered.
"With a storyteller's eye and sly sense of humor that echoes not only his honorary uncle Del Reeves, but Tom T. Hall and Roger Miller, Garner delves deep into everything from family dysfunction to road trips to matters of the heart. The music, which he describes with a laugh as diet country, embodies the spirit of that genre without any of the slavishness or self-seriousness of much modern Americana. Rolling Stone has called his style sweetly subversive, intellectual and addictive, while Lo-Down said the songs have an air of nostalgia but they sound far from old - modern, yet timeless.

This is a band that was formed out of the age old practice we all know and love as open mic night. About a year ago, when Cherry Street Tavern first opened, they invited musicians in to play on their newly constructed stage. "No Mic Night" was held every Wednesday night before the club even had a p.a. system. "Mask required to perform" during the first wave of the pandemic was a challenge but we soon realized if it meant we could play on stage it was well worth the effort! Great musicians and singers alike came out to participate and No Mic Night was a hit!
Soon enough the club sprung for a sound system thus starting Open Mic Night. Kevin Rupp was a staple early on with his guitar/drums instrumental sets and would bring his kit for everybody to play. A real team player! Daniel Foster aka "Kid Danger" brought his guitar skills to the table and set in with everybody. This kids got heart y'all! Corad Hyde has been holding down the bass but with the addition of Mike Walker the Bass Master, Conrad will be moving to cello. His first true love. John Boulware is a fiddle playin badass known to all. The man can play anything! I, Matt Bohannon recruited these guys to play with me and Big Ole Roots was born! Come see our set made up of songs new and old! You might just hear a Bohannons song or even an Up With The Joneses song. You might even hear a favorite cover "Everybody's Missing The Sun" by a band called Grin. However, with fiddle, cello, twin guitars, drums and bass, you aint never heard it like this before! We are on at 10pm followed by The Kernal at 11!
P.S. The Kernal are old friends of ours and these guys kick ass! come see for yourself! you won't be disappointed! Don't blow it!!
