Discrimination and Chaos 1933-2022 -- Paul Wolff
Paul Wolff is a member of the last generation of people who were witnesses to the rise of Nazism in Europe.  He was in Hamburg during Kristallnacht, the night of broken glass in 1938. That led to a forced exodus from Germany to the U.S. for him and his family.

In the 1930s, the Germans were fascinated by extreme racist policies prevalent in the United States. Paul's research found that in the early thirties, Hitler assembled a distinguished German panel to study the Jim Crow laws in the U.S. to improve and implement his plans to eradicate all Jews from the European Continent.

This course will use that as a starting point to explore how discrimination works when its tied to extreme ideologies -- then and now-- in both the German and U.S. culture.

Can we learn from history? Are we capable of change, can our great diversity possibly help us to promote a deeper sense of tolerance and empathy?

Paul Wolff was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1929.  After his sisters left on the Kindertransport, he was able to leave for London with his parents in 1939, arriving in San Francisco on August 1, 1939, a mere 30 days before the start of WW II  in Europe.  Education: Architecture, UC Berkeley, Akademie of Fine Arts, Munich,

MSc. Environmental Psychology, U. of Surrey, Guildford, England. Worked as an Architect in SLO, 1975-1998,

Professor of Architecture, Cal Poly, SLO, 1971-1994.
