The Bear
One of Chekhovs best comic sketches, The Bear tells of the wealthy heiress Popova, recently widowed, who receives an unwelcome visit from Smirnoff, a landowner to whom her late husband was in debt. Their social pleasantries quickly descend into a fierce quarrel, and before he knows it, the landowner has challenged the widow to a duel. When she happily accepts the chance to shoot him, he discovers that his passionate anger has been replaced with the fire of love. It all ends with a kiss and a great comic line.
