The movie Alice Street illustrates how a culturally diverse community united against city planners to save a beloved mural destined from demolition for a new high rise.  The communities positive approach to educating the city government has made the Alice Street mural a symbol of cultural resistance.  As quoted we didnt march to the city, we danced.

-Attendees will learn how public art strengthens communities

-Attendees will learn how creative tactics can effect governmental change

-Attendees will learn how design needs to be a community effort at the beginning of a project

-Attendees will learn the health benefits

When:  The movie will be available for viewing July 15th and 16th.  A link will be provided to those who register by July 14th. This will premier at 7pm and on the 7/15, and is available through 7/16.

DIRECTORS BIO:
After a decade working with gang-involved and homeless youth in the San Francisco Bay Area,
Spencer Wilkinson founded Endangered Ideas, a documentary production company in Oakland,
to focus on stories of resilience. Spencer directed and produced Alice Street, a documentary
depicting the struggle to preserve Oaklands ethnic arts and culture communities amid rapid
gentrification. The film won the Audience Choice Award for Feature Documentary at the 2020
Oakland International Film Festival and Social Impact Award at Thin Line Film Festival. The films festival highlights include the Urbanworld Film Festival, Mill Valley, Newport Beach, Marda Loop Justice, Milwaukee, Atlanta Docufest, DOCUTAH, Brighton Rocks, and London Rocks Film festival. With the support of grants from the California Arts Council and San Francisco Foundation, Alice Street screened in communities and schools impacted by gentrification throughout California. In 2018, Spencer directed the feature-length ONE VOICE: The Story of the Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir which premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival and was a 2019 East Bay Express Best Movie of the East Bay. The film was featured in the 2020 Truly CA season on PBS. In 2021, he directed the Weebly award-winning KQED: If Cities Could Dance episode, "Oakland Boogaloo."
