First Person: Authors Talk at KALA
Flamenco Artist Savannah Fuentes
At KALA Performance Space
KALA Performance Space presents a new and original monthly series and marks its opening after the one year pandemic performance venues closure.  First Person:  Authors Talk is an hour of lively discussion on the Kala stage, with local authors/writers and welcomes interview host Heather Hirschi.  The program will feature writers perspectives on everything writing--from craft to the zone of focused fun. Audience Q&A and a few surprises are part of the festivities!

Heather Hirschi is writer/educator originally from Salt Lake City, Utah, where she taught writing at the University of Utah for 25 years. Hirshis poetry, fiction, and essays have appeared in many journals and publications. She collaborates with the KALA stage to inspire and support the vibrant coastal writing scene.

KALA brings its second guest to the FIRST PERSON stage, Astoria poet Florence Sage. At the helm of the coastal poetry scene, Sage was co-founder of Monday Mic at the River Theatre and co-founding organizer of the annual Fisher Poets Gathering.

She has two published poem collections; Nevertheless: Poems from the Gray Area, was published by HIPFiSH Publications in 2014. Poem subjects ranged from love and loss to physics as a foil for human relationships.

Sages new book is more focused in subject, and unremittingly tender. The Man Who Whistled, The Woman Who Wished: A Polish- Canadian Story, is comprised of 62 narrative poems reflecting on Sages life growing up with her parents, children of Polish immigrants. The poems are set in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, from World War II through the following three decades.
The 2021 book, which has been featured in several regional winter and spring events online, is published by Gray Area Press with HIPFiSH Publications. Signed copies are at RiverSea Gallery, 1160 Commercial St., Astoria, OR, and Time Enough Books in Ilwaco, WA.
Sages third collection, What to Do with Night, a mix of light- and dark-leaning poems, is expected in 2022.
