An Education
Screen Style 2013

Dec 15

(Lone Scherfig, 2009)

Sunday, Dec 15 at 03:00PM

Though it was nominated for several Oscars, including Best Actress for newcomer Carey Mulligan, surprisingly few people have seen this sweet film. Based on the memoirs of British journalist Lynn Barber, Jenny (played by Mulligan) is a starry-eyed but self aware high school student in 1961 suburban London. While on a rigid Oxford-bound path, she is disillusioned with the dull life she sees before her. Dreaming of the Parisian drama in her French novels full of art, music, and romance, she is easily swept off her feet into the fast world of a well-dressed older man who leads her into his loud, glamorous world.

We watch Jenny transform from a dowdy school girl to a chic, confident young woman with the simple magic of a new dress and a trip to Paris. With all the charm of classics like Sabrina that filled my imagination as a young girl, the seemingly simple film speaks to the very pointed moment in the life of a woman; the moment she decides who she is. Watch An Education for the nostalgia, the stunning 1960s costumes and props, and watch it for the reminder of that moment when your eyes were first opened tot he beauty of the world, and your place in it.

Selected by Jill and Wayne Donnelly of Baby and Company

Jill and Wayne Donnelly took over the iconic, long-adored Seattle boutique Baby and Co in 2010 and have since not only carried on the tradition of bringing the avant-garde to Seattle's most stylish women, but taken expectations even further. The couple remodeled their historic First Avenue space and added menswear to the mix in Spring 2013, and in so doing put a stamp on what the next 30 years will look like. Read: Inspired by the chicest European sidewalks, but rooted in the earthiness of the Northwest.

Join us post-screening at 5pm for Dress and Drink happy hour + a pop up shop of men's and women's clothing and accessories, curated by the Donnellys and informed by the 1960s Parisian-inspired awakening in An Education. Hosted in the Northwest Film Forum lobby, open to the public.
