Somatic Practices: Improvisational research with K.J. Holmes
Full Workshop meets Friday - Sunday, Jan 24-26, 2014.
Fri, 6-9 pm.  Sat, 10 am - 3 pm.  Sun, 10 am - 4 pm.
Single class meets Thursday, Jan 23, 6:30 - 8:30 pm.

The workshop will be a study of these experiential movement practices in relationship to creative expression, performance, and healing modalities.  We will focus on specific systems of the body (skeletal, organ, nerves, fluids, glands) exploring qualities, textures, thought processes and movement anaysis and their application to form and forming.

The classes will play with the embodying of developmental/evoluationary patterns and transitions between the wisdom of our experience and the unknown through different modes of perceptual awareness.  Body-Mind Centering(r) (BMC, tm), is a system of re-education, developed by Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen, engaging experiential anatomy and touch and re-pattering.  Ideokinesis is a method of using imagery and tactile aid to release the body into supportive action originally developed through the work of Mabel Todd (The Thinking Body), and reined by the teaching of Andre Bernard.  Contact Improvisation, initiated by dancer Steve Paxton in 1972, is a dance between partners engaged in play with physics--including weight, momentum, stillness, inertia, suspension, lightness, time and space.

K.J. Holmes, based in Brooklyn, NY, is a dance artist and singer, actor, poet, director and teacher.  All this creates the parameters for her to get lost in creatie process and find what there is to confront and illuminate about being alive through performance.  She has been fortunate to work with forerunners of dance improvisation such as Steve Paxton, Karen Nelson, Lisa Nelson and Simone Forti, among many other outstanding artists.  J.J. is a certified yoga teacher (SATYA 2007), a graduate of the School for Body-Mind Centering (r) (BMC) tm (1999), and the William Exper Studio (Meisner acting, 2007)--of which the play between is essential to her current practices.  She is currently a 2012-14 Movement Research Artist in Residence where she also teaches, is adjunct faculty at New York University Experimental Theatre Wing, the New School and Yale University, and travels worldwide leading workshops and performing.  She is currently performing with Miguel Gutierrez and the Powerful People, as well as developing her new piece HIC SVNT DRACONES.
