Workshop with Ellen Mason: A Dozen Ways to Use Variegated Yarn

It has happened to most of us: We fall head over heels for a gorgeous skein of multicolor variegated yarn, we buy it, we knit it, and then we discover it was so much prettier when it was just a skein. Ugh.
Let's explore some tips, tricks, and techniques that employ variegated yarn to best advantage. We will discuss what makes variegated yarn behave and misbehave, and look at examples. Come ready to learn some new stitches and formulas.

Notes:
Students will be working on a swatch that explores 12 different techniques. Written instructions will be provided. Photo examples will be provided on a computer, as well as physical samples. Additional techniques will be discussed but not demonstrated. Yarn will be provided, but students are welcome to bring their own problem yarns. Student should bring one circular needle, US size 8, any length. Student may bring straight needles in addition, if preferred. Limit of 12 students.

Biography
Ellen Mason Design

Ellen lives with her family in a handmade home in the Lakes Region of New Hampshire. She has always been curious about textiles and would like to explore every process in the world before she kicks the bucket. So far, she has endeavored knitting, machine knitting, sewing, weaving, silk-screen and dyeing. She earned a degree in studio art, emphasis on weaving, and has worked as a trim designer, illustrator, children's clothing designer, and dyer.

On Groundhog Day, 2013 she launched a personal project called Dress + Cardigan: Twelve dresses sewn and twelve cardigans knit, six of the cardigans worked into patterns. On Groundhog Day, 2014, she will poke her head up and look around: If she casts a shadow there will be another six weeks of the project.
