The Future of the Hybrid Airships
This course will present the evolution of lighter-than-air aircraft, beginning with hot air balloons, as they morph to hydrogen gas airships, helium gas airships, and, finally, hybrid airships.

A hybrid airship merges four individual transportation vehicles into a revolutionary design: airplane, airship, hovercraft and catamaran.

During the first session, we'll trace airship development:
(1) Chinese lanterns in 220 AD
(2) the first successful human-carrying flight in Paris in 1783
(3) the first hydrogen filled human-carrying flight also in 1783
(4) the creation of the steerable and electric propelled airship in 1872
(5) America entering the airship era using helium in 1923
(6) passenger-carrying German Zeppelin airships crossing the Atlantic in 1928
(7) the introduction of British airships in 1929
(8) the Hindenburg fire in 1937
(9) today's Goodyear airship used for advertising and sports events camera platform.

During the second session we'll highlight recent technologies and design innovations that point toward a bright future for the hybrid airship that combines aerodynamic lift from vehicle shaping with helium lift to create a new transportation system that fits between aircraft and ships in speed and cost.

Bruce Wright spent over 50 years in the Aerospace Industry, 34 with the Skunk Works (the official alias for Lockheed Martin's Advanced Development Programs/Projects). During that time he participated in the design and development of   31 aircraft and spacecraft. He led the development teams in 19 of those. He is the "father" of the F-22 Raptor, USA's front line stealth fighter. He has taught aircraft design and history of air and space at Cal Poly for the last five years.  He taught the course " From the U-2 to Drones: Evolution of US Surveillance Aircraft" for LLCC this past summer.

This course has two class sessions: Tuesday, December 3 and Wednessday December 11 from 1pm - 3pm. Purchase of a ticket for this course entitles you to attend both class sessions.

Please purchase a separate ticket for each person so that we can have a record of all attendees.

Please remember to have Brown Paper Tickets send you a reminder for this course. You can do that before you begin the signup process. Look for the "Remind Me" section at the bottom right of this webpage. Thanks.
