Pieces Of Eight at Brüka Theatre - The Boy In The Gas Chamber Who Wasn't Allowed To Dance by Joseph Galata
Brüka Theatre presents a new series of short original performances in our "Pieces Of Eight" Festival November 8 10, 2013 featuring four different short pieces of theatre from our community. Each piece is up to an hour in length. Tickets are $10 in advance or at the door for each show. Seating is limited for the performances, so please make advance reservations at Brüka Theatre 775.323.3221. THE BOY IN THE GAS CHAMBER WHO WASN'T ALLOWED TO DANCE JOSEPH GALATA
Synopsis: THE BOY IN THE GAS CHAMBER WHO WASN'T ALLOWED TO DANCE, written and performed by Joseph Galata, premiered to standing ovations in the All Star Theatre in New York City in 2012. A dramatic-musical production, the staging is based on a true Nevada story and features music and songs performed by Mark Emerson and the Many Paths Community Singers. Galata portrays a semi-illiterate and impoverished country pumpkin farmer/cobbler/puppet maker in rural Indiana on the night of Friday Sept 29, 1944 when his teenage grandson mentally and physically disabled is scheduled for execution in the Carson City Nevada State Prison's gas chamber. But people throughout Reno, Sparks, and Carson City including nurses at St. Mary's Hospital, maids and musicians at the hotels, and high school students from both Reno High and Sparks High - have been leading campaigns to prevent the scheduled execution. Inside the grandfather's work shed, the confused and grieving man holds a telegram sent from the Nevada prison warden. When Grandpa finds the courage to open the telegram - he will then know whether his grandson has already stepped - barefoot - into Nevada's gas chamber.
Joseph Andrejchak Galata Bio:
"Within my family's cultural racial, ethnic, and spiritual heritage, my childhood was an incredible arena for dancing and storytelling but not for entertainment as much as for celebrating life, mourning tragedies, healing of traumas, and discovering beauty."
Joseph has performed in dance companies and theatre productions throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, Western and Eastern European, Asia, and the Middle East. In the 1970's, Joseph lived in Israel creating dance productions with and for survivors of the WW11 Holocaust concentration camps. In the late 1980's, as a faculty member at UNR, he created two arts education programs.
1) CREATIVE COMBUSTION with culturally and economically disadvantaged teens - traveling the country performing their Anti-Drug and Anti- Gang Dances, and 2) IMAGINATION MAKERS with children from diverse racial and ethnic heritages performing on a weekly able television show. For four years, Galata worked in two hospices using dance, theatre, storytelling, and media on healing from grief and mourning. As a former Representative to the United Nations Social-Economic Council, Joseph worked with many international groups on the use of theatre and dance, ethnic and religious arts, for healing of minority groups in refugee camps.
