Antigone, on its most basic level is the story of how one of the daughters of Oedipus challenges the law of man, choosing instead to obey God's law. In the version Sophocles wrote, most of us would side with Antigone as she fights for the right to bury her brother Polynices, who fought against Thebes. Creon , the King of Thebes, and her uncle, is portrayed as a tyrant and garners no sympathy from the audience. However, in the Jean Anouilh version the argument is not so clear; right and wrong are not black and white and the audience is left to grapple with the questions. This makes for interesting theater! This play is particularly relevant in today's political landscape as individuals all over the world put their very lives at stake to do the right thing.
