Founded in Israel (1997) as a private initiative of four young musicians, Aviv String Quartet succeeded to win a series of prestigious prizes such as 1st Prize and the Grand Prize in Melbourne Chamber Music Competition, Australia (1999), 1st Prize and Critics Prize in Bordeaux Quartets Competition, France (2003),1st Prize at Amadeus Quartet Contest (Heerlen, Netherlands 1999), Special Schubert Prize at Schubert Competition in Graz, Austria (2003), 2nd Prize in Prague Spring Quartets Competition (1998). Aviv was also proclaimed as the "Best Young Ensemble" by the Culture Ministries of Germany (1999) and Israel (2000), and received the special award for the Best Musical Ensemble in Israel (2003).
During the last eight years Aviv performed on the best chamber stages in the world, including the Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Barge Music Series and others in New York, the Kennedy Center, the Library of Congress and Phillips Collection in Washington, the Wigmore Hall and the Royal Festival Hall in London, Louvre Auditorium, Chatellet, St. Chapelle and Theatre de la Ville in Paris, Opera House in Sydney, Vienna and Stockholm Concert Houses, Cologne Philharmonic, Beethoven House in Bonn, Tonhalle in Zurich,Mozarteum Salzburg etc.
Aviv also accomplished several concert tours to USA, Canada, Brazil, South Africa, China, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Latvia and France and took part in prestigious festivals such as Lockenhaus and Deutchlandsberg in Austria; Obersdorfer, Schwetzingen and others in Germany; Montpelier, Parc Floral, Colmar, Luberon and Aix a Province and others in France; Le Folle Journee (Nantes, Lisbon, Bilbao); Verbier in Swityerland, Festival de Flanders, Dubrovnik in Croatia; Gotland and Linkoping in Sweden, Oistrakh in Estonia, Jerusalem, Eilat and others in Israel etc.
The repertoire of the quartet is broad enough to include more than 100 chamber works representing two and a half centuries of chamber composition, starting with Mozart and Haydn, continuing with all Beethoven's quartets, the greatest works of the romantic period (Schubert, Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms etc), three generations of Czech music (Smetana, Dvorak, Janacek), 20th century composers (such as Ravel, Debussy, Bartok, Webern, Berg, Britten, Stravinsky), the wide range of Russian music, from Tchaikovsky and Borodin to Prokofiev and Shostakovich, whose complete set of 15 quartets and the Piano Quintet are being recorded by Aviv during the last two years (7 quartets and the Piano Quintet of Shostakovich were also presented in 2006 year in the Wigmore Hall and received an extremely positive review in the April edition of the STRAD Magazine; the complete cycle of Shostakovich's quartets is presented during this summer at the famous Verbier Festival); Aviv also performs Israeli and international contemporary music by Schnittke Kancheli, Wisenberg, Kopytman, Brener and others. Besides, the Quartet has performed almost all the famous quintets, cooperating with both local soloists and international stars.
Aviv also gave series of Master Classes (as a quartet) in Israel, Sweden, Canada and South Africa; members of the Aviv Quartet are employed as visiting tutors at several academies in Israel and abroad.
