Ken Vandermark
Ken Vandermark is an American jazz composer and saxophone and clarinet player. A fixture on the Chicago-area music scene since the 1990s, Vandermark has earned wide critical praise for his playing and his multi-layered compositions, which typically balance intricate orchestration with passionate improvisation. He has led or been a member of many groups including The Flying Luttenbachers, NRG Ensemble, Territory Band, Vandermark 5 and RARA AVIS, has collaborated with many other musicians, and was awarded a 1999 MacArthur Fellowship. He plays tenor saxophone, clarinet and bass clarinet; in about 2000, added baritone saxophone to his arsenal, and often favors the instrument, particularly in larger ensembles. Nate Wooley
Nate Wooley was born in 1974 in Clatskanie, Oregon. He began playing trumpet professionally with his father, a big band saxophonist, at the age of 13. Nate moved to New York in 2001, and has since become one of the most in-demand trumpet players in the burgeoning Brooklyn jazz, improv, noise, and new music scenes. He has performed regularly with such icons as John Zorn, Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith, Evan Parker, and Yoshi Wada, as well as being a collaborator with some of the brightest lights of his generation like Chris Corsano, C. Spencer Yeh, Peter Evans, and Mary Halvorson. Wooley's solo playing has often been cited as being a part of an international revolution in improvised trumpet. A combination of vocalization, extreme extended technique, noise and drone aesthetics, amplification and feedback, and compositional rigor has led one reviewer to call his solo recordings "exquisitely hostile". Demolition Duo
The Demolition Duo is Dr. John C Savage (flutes & saxophone) and Ken Ollis (drums). No holds barred free jazz by a couple of master musicians.
The Creative Music Guild is a Portland, Oregon all-volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to promote experimental, improvised music by presenting concerts, workshops and other events that bring together internationally recognized musicians with local performers, audiences and music students of all ages. For over twenty years, the CMG has been a leader in cultivating Portland's experimental and improvised music.
Confluence, our visiting artist series, is where the CMG started back in 1991 with bringing the best improvisers in the world to Portland. We present 6-8 concerts a year by artists from all over the world at venues around Portland. Our programming committee carefully curates this series taking into account diversity (both musical diversity as well as gender & ethnic diversity), quality and recognition (extremely high quality of craft is a given and some degree of critical and/or community recognition within the creative improvisation scene is crucial) and the ability of the musicians to come to Portland without our help (we generally don't get involved in concerts that would happen without us).
