The Confession
The second production of City Lit Theater's 2008-2009 season, The Confession by Mary Roberts Rinehart, in a world premiere adaptation by City Lit associate artistic director Cameron Feagin, will begin previews at City Lit Theater on Friday, November 7 and open for the press on Tuesday, November 16. The production, directed by artistic director Terry McCabe, runs through December 14.
The Confession is a powerful depiction of the pressures of guilt and mental breakdown. A woman rents a home and finds in it a confession tobut no evidence ofa horrible crime. A mystery but not a detective story, The Confession is a portrait of a woman caught up in circumstances beyond her control or understanding.
Mary Roberts Rinehart was the early 20th Century's most prolific and successful American woman mystery writer. Rinehart wrote hundreds of works, from travelogues to plays, but is best remembered today as a writer of mysteries. She is frequently called "the American Agatha Christie," because of their shared gender and genre, but much of Rinehart's work predates Christie's and differs significantly in tone. For a time Rinehart was America's most highly paid writer and her influence was widespread. Her novel The Door made the sentence "The butler did it" a standard expression, thougha la "Play it again, Sam" and "Elementary, my dear Watson"the expression never actually occurs in its supposed source. She was the favorite author of the teen-aged F. Scott Fitzgerald, whose mature style would owe her a significant debt, and comic book writer and artist Bob Kane credits the title character of Rinehart's play The Bata caped murdereras an inspiration for his character Batman.
The cast for The Confession is Thad Anzur, Cameron Feagin, Mary Poole, Mike Postilion and Kay Schmitt.
The design team is Stephen Murray (lighting), Branimira Ivanova (costumes), Christopher Kriz (sound), and Katie Schweiger (set).
The Confession will play Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and Sundays at 3:00 PM, November 7 through December 14. There are also two Thursday performances, December 4 and 11, at 8:00 PM. Press opening is Tuesday, November 11 at 7:00 PM. Ticket prices are $18 for previews and $25 after opening. Discounts are available for seniors, students and groups of ten or more. City Lit's production of The Confession is the second production of its twenty-ninth season. City Lit receives funding from the Alphawood Foundation, the Elizabeth F. Cheney Foundation, the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs CityArts program, and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. Its outreach program is sponsored in part by A.R.T. League.
City Lit specializes in literate theatre, including stage adaptations of literary material.
City Lit Theater is located in the historic Edgewater Presbyterian Church building at 1020 West Bryn Mawr Avenue, one block west of Sheridan Road and a block and a half east of the Bryn Mawr Red Line L stop. The 84 Peterson bus, the 147 Lake Shore Express bus, and the 151 Sheridan bus all stop near City Lit. Valet parking is available for theatre customers at Francesca's Restaurant, located across the street from City Lit. Discounted self-parking is available for theatre customers, with validation from the Edgewater Beach Caf, located in the Edgewater Beach Apartments building one block east of the theatre.
