Looking at the ways cultural activities shaped the development of Hebrew culture during the British Mandate of the 1920s and '30s, Nina Spiegel shows how political and social issues can influence a new society and provides a dynamic framework for interpreting present-day Israeli culture. Drawing on archives as well as an array of untapped primary sources, Spiegel argues that the Jewish community of this era created enduring social, political, religious, and cultural forms.  Spiegel is the Rabbi Joshua Stampfer Assistant Professor of Israel Studies at Portland State University. "A clear, concise and comprehensive guide to that fascinating period of ferment and ingenuity."  Yaron Peleg

At the height of World War II, lawyers in the U.S. Treasury Department discovered that highly educated, patrician diplomats had covered up a Nazi extermination scheme, placing a disturbing spotlight on the moral bankruptcy of the State Department. With narrative prowess, the author examines America's dismal failure to intervene to save European Jewry. Wallance is a prolific author, human rights activist and partner at the law firm of Kaye Scholer LLP. "The ultimate Washington thrillera valuable and timely warning as to how government should respond in times of moral crisis. Required reading.''          Kenneth R. Feinberg
