Interactive Workshop - Disability: The Blind Spot in Climate Activism pt.2
29.07.20 - 4:00-6:30pm 01.08.20 - 4:00-6:30pm
Please sign up for one workshop, there is space for a maximum of 25 participants per session.
We are inviting you to this interactive workshop designed as a follow up from the talk Disability The Blind Spot in Climate Activism. It is for people who want to effect real change within themselves and in the world. We will be focussing in the context of climate and social activism. However, we believe it will be meaningful for you whatever your interest, because we will be deepening on transferable concepts.
Our first talk was made to jump-start this conversation, to jump-start your (and our) understanding and perception shifts. Following on from these talks we wish to offer a wider series of events, workshops and training over the coming months. The exact structure and format this will take shall be developed through these first four sessions.
In this interactive workshop we hope to deepen your connection to the issue emotionally as well as practically, so that you can get a sense of what work needs to be done to better equip you with the beginnings of answers and solutions in any context for yourselves. You will be challenged, not accused and not judged.
We will be exploring the often overlooked social and cultural narratives and perceptions that permit disablism, and start the emotional process of acknowledgement and understanding. This is not a mechanical exercise. A machine IS what it does. It is defined by its output. We do not wish to replicate the culture that values people like that. The human experience is more than mechanical and this emotional processing is part of that. We will not be giving you easy answers on how to make specific places and events accessible. We want that too. But not when the majority of the work to get us there falls on the shoulders of the oppressed.
So what will we be doing?
We feel it is important to acknowledge all of the different journeys and experiences that have ultimately brought us here. There is value behind this motivation and it will inform this ongoing process over the coming months.
We recognise that in many places oppressed and marginalized groups are pressured to prove their experience. We will be holding a supported space where if you identify with that, you will not be put in that position.
We will recap with a condensed summary of the talk you attended and hold space to deepen on some of the areas covered with further Q&As, only briefly so please, if you feel the need to you can re-watch the presentation here beforehand.
We will be trialling a number of different facilitation tools which focus on helping you navigate your experiences and putting them in the wider context of systematic oppression and ableism. These may include small-group listening exchanges, popcorn sharing with the wider group and moderated whole-group exercises.
We hope that coming away from this you will have a deeper understanding of how people are disabled focussing on Climate Activism specifically deepening on the social & cultural aspects before the physical barriers. That said we will sign post to other workshops to help you learn about physical barriers more specifically and hope to host our own going forwards.
Please fill out the form sent with registration if you wish to attend this workshop or simply to register your interest for future workshops and training.
