This classic of American realism tells the story of "Doc" and Lola Delaney, a fading middle-aged couple living quietly desperate lives in small-town Kansas, absorbed by lost dreams and failed ambitions. Doc, a disillusioned recovering alcoholic, goes through the daily motions as a chiropractor, having abandoned a career in medicine many years ago. His needy housebound wife, Lola, desperate for warmth and affection, still longs for the companionship of her little dog "Sheba", who has been missing for nearly a year. Into this mix comes Marie, a carefree young co-ed happily dabbling at love and romance. When she rents a room from the Delaneys, their home is suddenly infiltrated by the ghosts of their own failings: Doc's professional failings, Lola's failings as a wife and mother, and the shared failings of their marriage. This story is both beautiful and heart-breaking and should please anybody with a healthy taste for realistic domestic drama.

William Inge ("The Playwright of the Midwest") hails from Independence, Kansas; his hometown hosts the William Inge Theatre Festival every year to honor American playwrights of note and encourage the development of new plays. He won the Oscar in Screenwriting for Splendor in the Grass, the Pulitzer Prize for his play Picnic, and is well-known for his hits Bus Stop and Dark at the Top of the Stairs. Come Back, Little Sheba was his first Broadway hit, in 1950. Shirley Booth (future star of the hit sitcom Hazel and longtime Broadway star) won both the Tony and the Oscar for Best Actress in her portrayal of Lola Delaney.
