FREEDOM FILM SERIES: Visions of Abolition: From Critical Resistance to A New Way of Life
Visions of Abolition: From Critical Resistance to A New Way of Life: Part I "Breaking down the Prison Industrial Complex" provides a critical exposé of the mass incarceration, the war on drugs, and the connections between slavery, capitalism and the prison industrial complex. This documentary introduces the history, theory and practices of the contemporary prison abolition movement. Weaving together the voices of women entangled in the criminal justice system, along with leading scholars on prison abolition (Angela Davis and Ruth Wilson Gilmore), this film provides a critical analysis of the disfunctionality and violence of the prison system.

This screening, panel responses and discussion will be moderated by Washington Incarceration Stops Here (WISH) and Eliminating the Prison Industrial Complex (EPIC).

Washington Incarceration Stops Here (WISH) is a grassroots group dedicated to opposing prisons, criminalization and immigration enforcement. We started in April 2012 as a group of people who want to stop King County's plans to spend $210 million dollars to build a new youth jail and court buildings at 12th and Alder in the Central District of Seattle. The plan also includes building commercial spaces that will further gentrify the Central District.
