Sounds of Brazil: String Theory
PDX-Brazil Productions presents a concert featuring CHORO music, early jazz from Brazil, or Brazil's first "urban pop" music. This will be a "string-centric" performance showcasing the works of many of Brazil's most important 20th century composers - Pixinguinha, Jacob do Bandolim, Villa-Lobos, and many more. Three acoustic acts (solo, duo, and trio) bring to life the intricate and sultry melodies of classic Choro, as well as pinch of other genres from Brazil.
Portland's beautiful Old Church venue provides a perfect setting for the intimacy of a string concert. Refreshments, beer & wine will be available before show and at intermission.
CHORO DA ALEGRIA
The Portland-based acoustic trio plays classic compositions of Choro, Samba, and MPB.
Featuring:
Tom Pinit (bandolim/Brazilian mandolin) Has played violin, electric bass, and most recently mandolin, Tom was bitten by the Brazilian music bug soon after taking up the bandolim. Tom has studied choro with world-renowned musicians Mike Marshall (CA), Dudu Maia (Brazil), Douglas Lora (Brazil), and Jovino Santos Neto (WA). Tom is active in Portland's choro scene playing in several local groups. Recently Tom co-produced Portland's Dia do Choro PDX celebration.
Pam Beaty (guitar, cavaquinho) is a classically-trained guitarist who has been a long-time devotee of Brazilian music. Drawing inspiration from Segovia to Jobim, to Bonfa, she is passionate about guitar, and Brazilian music. Pam teaches guitar at colleges in the Portland area, and performs in several ensembles. She is an active member of Portland's Bossa Nova and Choro scene.
Peter Fung (guitar and percussion) has been happily obsessed with samba and choro for the last two decades. He has been a performing member of the Manhattan School of Samba (NYC), the Lions of Batucada (Portland), and Samba do Coraçao (SF Bay Area). Peter has studied music in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador, Brazil. Among his teachers are Arnaldinho do Cavaco, Alexandre Lora, Derek Rieth, among others. Peter is founder of Portland's annual Dia do Choro PDX, and a core member of the local samba pagode community.
SERGIO BOTELHO (solo guitar)
Sergio was born and raised in Brazil. He has been influenced by great composers such as Tom Jobim, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Chico Buarque, and has a passion for Bossa Nova. About Villa-Lobos Sergio's says, "...What particularly attracts me in the music of Villa-Lobos is the originality of rhythms and harmony. He has the unique ability to capture the essence of Brazilian culture and translate it into beautiful and exotic music." Lucky for Portlanders, Sergio now lives in the City of Roses, and we have the chance to hear his interpretations of Brazilian masters.
RIO CON BRIO
Rio Con Brio captivates audiences around the country with their intimate performance of the beautiful and esoteric Brazilian repertoire known as choro, the early 20th century street music of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Guitarist Mike Burdette and mandolinist Tim Connell exhibit finesse and passion in their playing, while displaying a sincere love of the choro repertoire and connection to their audience. An evening with Rio Con Brio is a delightful tour of European and New World music as experienced by the mandolin and guitar and as told by two soulful, intelligent, modern musicians a beautiful intersection of Brazilian rhythm, classical technique and jazz improvisation.
