Florence Nightingale famously revolutionized nursing at Scutari (in modern-day Istanbul) during the Crimean War. A prodigious and successful writer, including on religion and mysticism, and a groundbreaking statistician, she founded the first secular nursing school in the world at St Thomas' Hospital in London. She was also a leading social reformer, influencing healthcare, hunger relief, and women's position in society from the battlefields of the American Civil War to the rice paddies of India and the backstreets and workhouses of England.

Lynn McDonald is director of the sixteen-volume Collected Works of Florence Nightingale and Florence Nightingale at First Hand, 2010. She is university professor emerita at the University of Guelph, Ontario, a former Member of the Canadian Parliament and president of the National Action committee on the Status of Women, then Canada's largest women's organization. As a parliamentarian, she sponsored Canada's ground-breaking legislation to establish smoke-free work and public places and ban cigarette advertising, in 1988. She is co-founder of The Nightingale Society, which promotes the vision and work of Florence Nightingale and defends her reputation and work.
