Many 20th-century cultural critics, especially those influenced by Marx, argued that market economies undermine and erode the values of traditional cultures. There is certainly truth in that. So why, then, is America's most traditional culture -- the South -- so sympathetic to free market policies?

Barton Swaim is a columnist and book reviewer for the Wall Street Journal, and writes frequently for The Weekly Standard, The New Criterion, and the Times Literary Supplement. He worked as a speechwriter for Governor Sanford from 2007 to the end of his term.

Swaim grew up in Greenville and Surfside Beach and now lives in Columbia, SC. He holds postgraduate degrees in English literature from Edinburgh University (PhD) and the University of South Carolina.
