This workshop is critical to anyone who works with adults
Overview:
Ever been in a different country or cultural context and wonder.. do I kiss, bow, or shake hands?
The country and culture we are borne in, defines the way we view, mirror and interpret other peoples thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Standards which we perceive as the norm, we have learned from our subculture the extended family.
Each culture has its own behavioral codes and communication techniques and may deal with emotions like anger in a different way than we are used to.
Different cultures = different communication and behavioral codes.
This workshop presents major cross-cultural communication theories, ways that cultural values, power, privilege and differences affect the way we communicate, tools for questioning assumptions, and ways to improve cross-cultural communications skills.
Why I Should Attend:
What might be considered good business practice such as a strong (Western) handshake is actually offensive to an Indonesian male.
What might be considered a outward expression of emotion in North America, is actually frowned upon in certain Asian cultures.
Humans communicate on many levels: spoken language, tone, body language, style and personality. The fact that we have complex cultural identities and a host of differing past experiences increases the probability of cross-cultural miscommunications.
In order not to offend people we have to live, work and do business with, educators, consultants, embassy personnel, business people, and everyone in between have to study the behavioral codes of these countries beforehand.
About the Presenter
Rosetta Lee (she/her and they/them) serves Seattle Girls School in Seattle, WA in dual roles. SGS is an innovative school for Junior High School girls, aiming to empower women leaders and change agents and dedicating its energies to a diverse community of students and faculty, an anti-bias mission, and an integrated curriculum. As a faculty member, Rosetta teaches subjects such as science, math, technology, art, ethics, social justice, and more. As a professional outreach specialist, she designs and delivers trainings for all constituencies of the school community, as well as the local and national educational and nonprofit sectors.
