As the oldest daughter in an Irish-American family, Kitty Donohoe acquired a love of words at an early age and soon began writing poetry and entertaining younger siblings with her made-up tales and songs. Her mother, a classically-trained pianist, played mostly at night, and for many years her daughter thought that everyone went to bed listening to Mozart and Schubert. "I would lie for hours letting the music drift over me," she confesses, "and I suspect that has a lot to do with my sense of melody today." At sixteen, Kitty picked up a guitar and was soon performing her songs at open mic nights and local coffeehouses in and around her native Michigan. Moving to Nova Scotia at nineteen, she discovered traditional Celtic sounds. But Kitty's music defies classification, for its influences are as varied as her lyrics are "heartfelt, direct and honest," and her voice "gorgeous," "angelic," and "just right on everything from a mournful ballad to a gritty blues number." Since recording her first album in 1986, Kitty has earned the respect of music critics across the country and the abiding affection of fans who know her as a warm and natural performer whose songs are "intelligent, literate...[and] infused with an inherent optimism." Many consider her song "There Are No Words," written on 9/11, for which she received a Michigan Emmy, to be profoundly moving. In so many ways, Kitty Donohoe is, as someone wisely observed, "...what we come to expect from leaders in songwriting."
