Music has played a major role in Garnet Rogers's life from early childhood. As a boy of six, he and his older brother, Stan, would lie in their darkened bedroom, listening to broadcasts from the Grand Ol' Opry and practicing their harmonics. Within ten years, the brothers were on the road together as full-time working musicians, forming one of the most influential acts in North American folk music. Garnet acted as producer and arranger for his older brother from 1973 until Stan's death in 1983 and has since established himself as a formidable solo artist, writing most of his own material and with more than a dozen albums to his name. Standing close to six-and-a-half feet tall, Garnet is a man of powerful physical presence, yet it is his "smooth, dark baritone," voice, incredible range, thoughtful, dramatic phrasing, over-the-top humor and underlying optimism which have won him both critical acclaim and loyal admirers in his native Ontario and across the continent. Hailed by the Boston Globe as a "charismatic performer and singer," and by the Victoria Times as "a national treasure," his ongoing concerts in support of the London & Area Food Bank are an essential part of his work. "Everyone gets hungry," he says, and this is his way of leaving something behind where people are actually benefitting from the concert on some level. The song-writing process is for Garnet one of "trying to make sense of [his] life" and the world around him. In the process, he entertains, delights, and often surprises audiences wherever he performs.
