GLIMMER ISLAND -- two short plays by Ed Ballou
In RETURN FROM BIRD ISLAND a family of sea-going settlers in the year 1900 struggles for survival, and a teenage son struggles to accept the ultimate departure of his father. The boy waits for his father's ship to return from the fabled Bird Island and searches for answers to "why?" and "when?". This is a story of denial set in the Age of Sail and written in the style of John Millington Synge's Riders
To The Sea.
In THE GLIMMER an alcoholic couple (a half-blind ex-boxer and his critical yet nurturing wife) battle their pasts and each other. As they argue, they draw a perhaps suicidal young neighbor into playing an unlikely savior as he becomes forced to choose between his own redemption or the
ultimate release of his spirit. Redemption strives to flower in the shadow of a great and beckoning bridge.
