Staying Alive-- Butterfly Characteristics Survival Behavior & Adaptations -- Peggy Coon
Peggy Coon -- Chairman of the Pismo Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove--  will lead a classroom discussion (with her own pictures) about  how butterflies "Stay Alive" by using colorful patterns and markings on their wings for protective coloration, warning, mimicry, attraction and more.  She will also demonstrate how butterflies survive in each stage of their development including the egg, larva and chrysalis by also using colors and camouflage.  Peggy will share photos taken in Costa Rica, the Caribbean, Belize, Mexico and of course the Monarch Butterfly Grove at Pismo State Beach.

Following the classroom presentation, we'll adjourn to the Monarch Butterfly Grove for a private tour led by Peggy.  You will have ample opportunities for discussion at both locations.  Bring binoculars, and dress appropriately - it can get cool at the Grove.

Peggy Coon has 5 years of experience as a Docent in the Pismo State Beach Monarch Butterfly Grove.  She has served at the Chairperson for the Grove for three years and is currently in charge of research and community outreach.  Her passion for butterflies dates back to her childhood but was reawakened during retirement.  She has visited the Monarch overwintering groves in Mexico twice and has studied butterflies and their adaptations.  She will share her own pictures and research with us.  Her background in natural resources includes a stint with the National Park service as an Interpretative Ranger, and two years of study in Natural Resources. She holds a BA in Behavioral Science from Cal State San Jose and she had a corporate career for over 35 years.
