An Evening of Dhrupad (North Indian) Surshringar with Jody Stecher and Wyetta Bontempo
Artichoke music and the Society for Historic and Rare Instruments of India (SHRII) present an Evening of Dhrupad (North Indian) Surshringar Music featuring Jody Stecher & B Wyetta Bontempo. The surshringar, an ancestor of the modern sarod, originated at the start of the 19th century amongst the descendants of Tansen in North India. The instrument was created by adding a steel fingerboard to the ancient Seni rabab which improved the tonal clarity and increased the sustain of the strings. Surshringar is a superb instrument for dhrupad alap, able to bring out the subtle microtonal shadings, long sweeping meend and curvilinear melodic contours of Dagar bani dhrupad. Its soothing sound is similar to the vina, though sweeter in the mid and upper ranges.

For the past half century Jody Stechers deep and vivid music has been an inspiring influence spanning generations and continents. He is a renowned singer and multi-instrumentalist, whose recordings have been Grammy finalists, Indy Award winners and perennial favorites. Reviewers consistently remark on Jodys ability to capture the essence and core of traditional music or to crystalize the spiritual essence of a song while making it his own. In the mid-1960s, he became interested in, and then devoted to, raag sangeet, the modal classical music of India in which creative personal expression and the careful keeping of ancient musical ways are equally valued. Jody had the good fortune to study intensively with the sons of Ustad Ziauddin Khan Dagar (1886-1946), the chief musician of the royal court of Udaipur. Jody learned surshringar from Ustad Zia Mohiuddin Dagar (1929-1990) in the 1970s-80s and later received significant input and guidance from Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar (1932-2013). These two extraordinary musicians, the 18th generation of a family of celebrated teacher-practitioners actively nurtured Jodys creative abilities while carefully transmitting the fine details of their musical heritage.
