Therapists often do not pay attention to what patients do in office waiting rooms before the session starts. This causes an important source of clinical information to be ignored. This presentation seeks to address this gap.

Learning Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to apply the concepts presented to studying patients' words and behavior in their office waiting rooms and utilize them in the therapeutic work.
2. Participants will be able to describe the importance of considering all that goes on before an actual session starts in the therapist's office.

About our Presenter:
Aisha Abbasi is a training and supervising analyst at the Michigan Psychoanalytic Institute and its immediate past president.  She is the author of the book, The Rupture of Serenity: External Intrusions and Psychoanalytic Technique.  She was the plenary speaker at one of the recent spring meetings of The American Psychoanalytic Association, and her plenary on the topic of "Surprising Lessons from a Long Distance Psychoanalytic Treatment" was published last year in the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association.  She has contributed several book chapters and psychoanalytic articles on topics ranging from the impact of the interaction between the patient's questions and the analyst's wish for privacy or secrecy. Most of Dr. Abbasi's scholarly work in centered on the study of the day-to-day, minute-by-minute clinical interactions going on in the analyst's office, and how much there is to explore in and learn from such interactions.  She is on the Editorial Board of the Psychoanalytic Quarterly and a member of its Board of Directors.  She has also been an associate editor of the Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association.  Dr. Abbasi is a much sought after presenter, teacher, and supervisor/consultant, both nationally and internationally.
