ASCE COPRI Seattle Dinner Meeting - February 19, 2020
Topic:
The Planning, Design and Construction of the Port of Seattle Terminal 5 Berth Modernization Project

Description:
The Terminal 5 Berth Modernization project is underway to allow for servicing of 18,000 TEU ultra-large container ships. The work includes new crane rail beams, berth deepening, shore power, and upgraded site electrical capacity. The project has pushed the limits of prestressed concrete pile strengths and open-ended pipe pile geotechnical capacities via a Test Pile Program with Rapid Load Testing. It has overcome in-water slope stabilization constructability challenges and is on its way to Phase 1 completion at the end of 2020.

Speakers:
Joanna Hingle, P.E., S.E.
Senior Manager of Engineering Design, Port of Seattle

Brice Exley, P.E.
Senior Associate Geotechnical Engineer, Hart Crowser

Joanna Hingle is the Senior Manager of Civil & Structural Engineering Design Services at the Port of Seattle. Despite her east coast upbringing and education, she has called Seattle home for 16 years, where she has worked as a structural engineer in both the private and public sectors. Of the 10 years she has been at the Port, more than 6 have involved this T5 Berth Modernization project in some form.  Joanna is also a member of the ASCE 61 code committee for Seismic Design of Piers and Wharves.

Brice Exley is a geotechnical engineer experienced in slope and seawall stabilization, waterfront design, foundation and pavement design, and excavation shoring projects. He is an expert at numerical modeling and has focused these services on project sites with deep-seated liquefaction and lateral spreading hazards. Brice is also a member of the ASCE Seattle Geotechnical Group committee that produced the document Commentary Guidelines for Ground Improvement Using Discrete Elements, which is under consideration for policy adoption by local municipalities.
