The Howland Cultural Center, Beacon's unparalleled arts, cultural and entertainment venue, now celebrating its 40th Anniversary in enriching the cultural and social life of Beacon and the Hudson Valley, is pleased to present, in cooperation with the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York City, the Howland Playhouse Production of 'Why The Child Is Cooking In The Polenta',

"Why The Child Is Cooking In The Polenta,' which has had successful runs in London, Zurich, Munich and Bucharest starring the extraordinarily talented Alibec, is based on the 1999 semi-autobiographical novel of the same name written by the acclaimed Romanian author, Aglaja Veteranyi.

The protagonist is an unnamed girl who travels with her circus performing family to Western Europe from Romania. As illegal immigrants, the family members encounter difficulties which reveal the real living conditions of people living in a foreign country. The play explores the complexities of the relationship between language and identity, and the dilemma between staying or being forced to return home. Instead of providing a conclusion, the play challenges the audience to think deeply about how these undocumented immigrants deal with continuing, overt discrimination in a country not their own or risk returning to an unknown future in their native land.
