Trauma Informed Training
Port Gamble SKlallam Tribe has reduced recidivism by 81% with their target population by simply using a Trauma Informed Care approach with an emphasis on storytelling, restorative practices, relationship building and Success Coaches.
Trauma Informed Care is considered best practice for the treatment of those that are incarcerated. Research shows that retributive correctional models dont reduce recidivism. (Ed Latessa, 2002) Yet the criminal justice system in the United States continues to incarcerate at an unprecedented level, the highest in the world. (Washington Post, July 7, 2015;International Centre for Prison Studies, University of Essex, 2013, 10th edition).
This training will provide an overview of the seven essential ingredients for implementation of Trauma Informed Care:
1. Prevalence Exposure to and difficulty adjusting to adverse experiences is significantly more common than we previously had known. 2. Impact The impact of trauma is profound, especially when the adverse event occurs during key developmental timeframes. 3. Perspective Shift Helping those charged with caring for people struggling with trauma by simply changing the question from What is wrong with you? to What has happened to you and how can I support you? can bring understanding. 4. Regulation Knowledge of the basic architecture of the brain provides both an understanding of the impact of trauma and a key toward effective treatment. 5. Relationship Strong relationships help create resilience and shield a child from the effects of trauma. 6. Reason to Be Creates a sense of purpose or direction for individuals by ensuring theyre connected to family, community and culture. 7. Caregiver Capacity To effectively work with traumatized individuals, caregivers must take care of themselves and find a work/life balance.
