Strange & the Familiars

With one foot firmly planted in this world, and the other playing footsie beyond the veil, The Lady Strange has something to say. Some of these stories are her own, from a life of passion and missteps; and some of these stories were given to her from the animals, ghosts, and spirits who speak to her, to pass along to mankind, before its too late. Lessons and stories all, for a world full of lonely people who are looking for a light in the darkness.

Ms. Strange is most often found wandering around intersections and loitering in doorways, trying to get her bearings. She can also be found on stage, delivering her messages to unsuspecting audiences with her band of fearsome Familiars. Oh, and do be wary of the sharp edges. If the rose has taught us anything, its that beauty mishandled comes at a high price. See you on the other side.

Portland-grown spooky-and-sweet five piece, Strange & the Familiars combine clever and poetic lyrics, jazz vocals, and mesmerizing harmonies with tasteful percussion, colorful and off-beat guitar, and orchestral cello to bring audiences dark and playful narrative's under the guise of unusual subject matter.

Informed by animals, literature, and politics (though not overtly political), the music of Strange & the Familiars weaves a spell to bring hard truths to the light with passion and nuanced storytelling elements in the most unexpected ways.

Featured in publications like The Portland Mercury, Vortex Magazine, Willamette Weekly, and Eleven Magazine, radio stations like KBOO, Portland Radio Project, XRAY.FM, and House of Sound, and on podcasts like Emerge, Storytellers Telling Stories, Storybound, Geek in the City and more, Strange & the Familiars has been steadily finding their audience of odd ducks in Portland, Oregon through the years. Featured at a showcase for SXSW in Austin, Texas this year, and Folkfest at The Crystal Ballroom, and opening up for national acts like Tom Goss and Bria Skonberg, and Charming Disaster, Strange & the Familiars is doing their part to Keep Portland Strange.
